About Kerner
When George Lucas discovered, after Star Wars had been green-lit for production, that 20th Century Fox had closed down their special effects department, he started his own -- Industrial Light and Magic. ILM went on to make significant contributions to the film industry including spawning Pixar.
For most of ILM’s 30 year history the company used the name Kerner Optical, the name of the business that operated from the property before ILM moved in. This enabled ILM to hide ‘in plain site’ rather than
construct the high walls and fences that are characteristic of other major studios.
In 2006, as Lucas focused his attention on digital effects, he sold off the studios and model shop to the existing management team who chose to honor ILM’s legacy by retaining the name “Kerner”.
Kerner now operates from the same property and studios that ILM resided in for 30 years and is now a collection of creative and innovative companies and divisions. The group’s special effects division, KernerFX is an industry leading provider of practical effects with recent credits including Halcyon’s Terminator Salvation, DreamWorks SKG’s Transfomers II and Paramount Pictures’ classic Star Trek. Kerner has also developed cutting edge Kernercam 3D camera rigs, Kernervision 3D viewing equipment and 3D production suite software.
Kernerworks, the group’s version of Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks, is a solutions shop that provides problem-solving and undertakes unique projects for government and corporate clients.
